Beyond the Monarch: What September Means in a Maryland Meadow

A September meadow is still busy. It is feeding wildlife today while laying the groundwork for the life that will return next year.
Every September, monarch butterflies begin moving through Maryland on their long journey south. For many people, this is the moment when the meadow becomes especially noticeable, as orange and black butterflies appear among the goldenrods and asters and remind us that fall is approaching.
But the monarch is only part of the story.
September is one of the most important periods in a meadow. While some plants are finishing their growing season, others are just reaching their peak, with goldenrods, asters, ironweed, boneset, Joe-Pye weed, and other late-blooming natives providing nectar and pollen when spring and summer flowers have already faded. Goldenrods and asters are particularly important fall flowers for Maryland pollinators.

The need for nectar and pollen does not disappear when summer ends. Native bees are still gathering pollen and nectar, butterflies continue visiting flowers, and hoverflies, beetles, wasps, and other insects remain active among the blooms. Just some of these species are pollinators; many others are predators, decomposers, or food for birds and other wildlife. Fall-blooming plants can support this community of insects at a time when fewer flowers are available.
For monarchs, this late-season bloom is fuel for a remarkable journey. The monarchs passing through Maryland in late summer and early fall are part of the eastern population migrating to central Mexico, where they will spend the winter. They need abundant nectar along the way to build the energy reserves required for migration and overwintering. Late-season native plants such as asters, goldenrod, and New York ironweed are especially valuable during this period.
And the plants rely on the pollinators as much as the pollinators rely on the plants. Native plants must be pollinated to reproduce, and they rely on insects and other pollinators to move pollen between flowers. Successful pollination leads to seeds that become next year's plants, but those seeds also become an important food source for birds and other wildlife. The plants themselves continue to provide food, cover, and structure as the meadow moves into winter.

The September meadow does not merely fuel pollinators and send them on their way. Many insects will spend the winter right here in Maryland meadows, often in life stages that are almost invisible to us as eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults tucked into plant stems, leaf litter, soil, or other sheltered places. The vegetation that looks like it is beginning to fade is becoming part of the shelter and structure these animals will depend on during the colder months.
In other words, the September meadow is doing several jobs at once: it is a fueling station for migrating monarchs, a food source for insects that are still active, a pollination network helping plants reproduce, and the beginning of a winter refuge for wildlife that will remain here.
That last part is easy to miss. So, when you walk through a meadow in Gaithersburg this September, look beyond the monarch. Look for the goldenrod covered in insects, look closely at the asters, watch what is moving between the flowers, and notice how many different kinds of life are still using the meadow even as the days grow shorter.

If you have a meadow or native planting at home, resist the urge to tidy it up too soon. Those fading flowers, seedheads, stems, and leaves are not signs that the landscape has stopped working; they are becoming part of the system that will carry wildlife through winter and help the meadow begin again next spring. Leaving healthy stems and plant material in place can provide important overwintering habitat for bees and other beneficial insects.
